Program Description

Cemeteries are a direct connection to our ancestors and can provide essential information to genealogists. Archaeologist Cathy Draeger-Williams will discuss what we can learn from the symbolism on headstones in a cemetery. Headstones are works of art, but also a way to honor our loved ones and imbue different cultural and religious beliefs. They are a lasting legacy of ourselves and our family.

Draeger-Williams is an archaeologist with Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. She graduated from Vincennes University and Ball State University majoring in history and anthropology. She has been with the DNR for 18 years. She thinks the best thing about archaeology is that it deals with a variety of topics of human culture and life.

This program has been provided at no cost by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources & the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. We thank them for their generosity.
