Program Description

Dr. Michella Marino, author of Roller Derby: The History of an American Sport, explores the long history of roller derby and its connections to the Hoosier state, the fascinating gender dynamics of the co-ed sport, and its progressive inclusion of mothers and promotion of motherhood. Roller Derby, while both beloved and spurned for its hard hits, edgy attitude, and fast-paced action, offers insight into and lessons about American sporting culture. Two copies of her book will be raffled off at the event.

Dr. Marino grew up in Morristown, Indiana. She graduated with her B.A. from Hanover College, M.A. from the University of Louisville, and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She works as a public historian in Indianapolis.
