Come learn about composting and great practices to put your garden to bed for the winter. Our theme is “Fall into Spring,” and our objective is to help you set up your gardens and landscape for the most beautiful spring ever!

Lais McCartney, Purdue Extension Educator, will teach you the best techniques for composting, planting cover crops, and creating an environment to sustain not only your plants but also pollinators over the winter. The Master Gardeners will be on hand at education stations to give information on fall gardening and answer your questions.

Lais McCartney is the Ag and Natural Resources Educator for Purdue Extension Hancock County. Her work focuses on diversified farming systems (including beekeeping), natural resources, and horticulture. Lais was born and raised in Hancock county. She received her bachelor’s degree in Biology (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) from Purdue University. She is currently working toward her master's degree at the Polytechnic school at Purdue University in Technology, Leadership and Innovation.  Lais and her husband, Pat, have been keeping bees since 2008 on their small farm in Henry County, Indiana, where they also make maple syrup from their hilly sugar-maple forest. In her spare time, Lais helps manage a Facebook group for local-community beekeepers.

This "Green Thumb Project" is an initiative of the Hancock County Master Gardeners, whose mission is, in part, encouraging more people to discover fulfillment in gardening.
