Learn the basics of choosing a Medicare plan from Kit Paternoster, a counselor with the "State Health Insurance Assistance Program" (SHIP).
Signing up for Medicare is typically a daunting and often overwhelming task. Every year, from October 15 through December 7, Medicare holds open enrollment for people turning 65.
It's also an opportunity for those already on Medicare to review their current plans to see if different plans would better suit their needs.
That's where a SHIP counselor can help. SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company or agency and does not sell insurance. It is staffed by a crew of volunteer counselors who are part of a federal network of "State Health Insurance Assistance Programs," located in every state.
SHIP counselors have completed intensive training and offer neutral and unbiased advice. They act in the best interests of the individual and have no allegiance to any insurance or pharmaceutical company. Best of all, their help is free.
Paternoster will give a community talk and schedule appointments for audience members who would like a counseling session.
(This is not a time to change Medigap plans, sometimes called Medicare supplements, as these plans have different rules and guidelines.)
