This year marks the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end, with commemorations to take place around the globe. On Monday, April 21, author Barbara Olenyik Morrow will share the story of two Hoosiers who served in Europe during the war – a military police lieutenant who marched across France and Germany with U.S. General George S. Patton's Third Army and an American Red Cross club worker who assisted Allied troops slogging up the Italian peninsula.
The experience of these two individuals, along with their distinct voices and perspectives as gleaned from wartime letters, form the heart of Morrow’s latest book, Army Guy, Red Cross Gal: The Lives & Letters of Two Small-Town Hoosiers Who Helped Win World War II.
Morrow’s 6:30 p.m. lecture will include archival and other photos and will highlight why letters – and stories – from 80 years ago still merit our attention.
Morrow, of Auburn, is the author of seven books, most focusing on Indiana history. Her books have featured college basketball coaching legend John Wooden, nature writer and film producer Gene Stratton-Porter, and famed Underground Railroad leader Levi Coffin. A former journalist who has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Morrow lectures extensively around the state. Autographed copies of her new book (hardback, $27, paperback, $22) will be available before and after her presentation that day.
